Ian Torres was born in Manatí, Puerto Rico, and was raised in a small town called Vega Alta. He migrated to the US with his family at the age of 12 and has been living in the West Suburbs since then. He graduated with his Bachelor’s degree in Latin American and Latino Studies and a double minor in Political Science and Spanish from the University of Illinois at Chicago. As a student, Ian was part of student organizations like Mexican Students de Aztlan (MeSA), Fearless Undocumented Alliance (FUA) and served as co-chair for both the Hispanic Alliance for Career Enhancement (HACE) and the Union for Puerto Rican Students (UPRS). He was also a student leader for the UIC Heritage Garden, an intern and student educator of the UIC Latino Cultural Center. Through his involvement on campus and community organizations like the Puerto Rican Cultural Center, Ian has developed a passion for social justice, civic engagement, cultural appreciation, education, the arts and sustainability practices. Within L@s GANAS, Ian serves as the lead on science and heritage dialogues.
